Curriculum Overview
School Curriculum Intent
At Wilbury Junior school we have worked together to design a curriculum that supports the needs of the whole of our school community. We believe that our curriculum should be broad, balanced and relevant and meet the needs of all children whatever their ability. The curriculum taught is the National Curriculum and we ensure that all these statutory requirements are met and in some subjects go beyond these requirements. We ensure the children have a range of learning experiences that challenge, stimulate and promote thinking,learning and achievement. We are a school that promotes and develops lifelong learning and excellent learning habits, supporting progress of pupils and allowing them to shine during and beyond their time at Wilbury.
Aims
The curriculum is planned effectively, providing continuity and progression. It promotes an enjoyment of learning and a commitment to learning and achieving. It is underpinned by our school values.
Through the provision of rich and varied activities, we aim to:
- enable pupils to acquire and develop a broad and balanced range of knowledge, skills and understanding;
- encourage the best possible progress and the confidence to achieve and aim high in all pupils;
- enable pupils to make connections across different areas of learning;
- help pupils to think creatively and use developed organisational skills to solve problems;
- develop pupils’ capacity to show resilience towards their learning; working independently and collaboratively;
- enable pupils to work to understand sustainability - to develop knowledge, skills and motivations for their actions, allowing them to maintain their own environmental, social, physical and mental wellbeing – and that of the school, community and wider world now and in future generations.
- enable pupils to respond with courage to opportunities, challenge and responsibility;
- deepen and extend children’s cultural capital through knowledge and experience;
- develop children’s understanding of British Values, diversity, equity and inclusion; celebrating these with tolerance and respect within the school, community and wider world.
The Implementation of the Curriculum
The curriculum is taught through discrete subjects teaching of all subjects, making links when appropriate. We use the National Curriculum for all subjects.
For the teaching of Maths we use the government approved scheme of work and resources, Power Maths and for English we use the Herts for Learning scheme and resources, Essential Writing. For Reading we use Complete Comprehension alongside Herts for Learning recommended reads.
We also use the Charanga scheme for Music, Language Angels for French, Jigsaw PSHE, Get Set for PE scheme and Teach Computing scheme and resources for Computing.
For Science, History, Geography, RE, Art and Design Technology we use Cornerstones Curriculum Maestro to design the curriculum structure and for termly topics, resources and lessons.
Long-term plans for each subject area ensure complete coverage of the curriculum, consistency across year groups and progress throughout the school.
The children are taught with their year groups with some children being withdrawn for small group support.
Teaching the Curriculum in Line with the Equality Act 2010
At Wilbury Junior School, our curriculum is designed and delivered in full accordance with the Equality Act 2010. We are committed to ensuring that all pupils—regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation—have equal access to a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum.
We recognise our duty to eliminate discrimination, advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations across the school community. In practice, this means:
-
Inclusive Curriculum Design: We plan learning that reflects diverse cultures, histories, identities and perspectives, ensuring every child sees themselves represented and valued in what they learn.
-
High Expectations for All: All pupils are supported to achieve highly. We scaffold learning, adapt teaching and remove barriers so that every child can participate fully and make strong progress.
-
Targeted Support: Where appropriate, pupils receive additional or personalised provision, including small-group or one-to-one support, to ensure their needs are met without limiting access to the full curriculum.
-
Accessibility and Reasonable Adjustments: We ensure that curriculum resources, environments and experiences are accessible to all learners, making reasonable adjustments in line with statutory duties.
-
Promoting Respect, Equity and Inclusion: Through our curriculum and wider school ethos, we teach pupils to value diversity, challenge stereotypes, and develop understanding and respect for others.
-
Monitoring and Review: We regularly evaluate curriculum outcomes to ensure equity of access, participation and achievement, taking action to address any inequalities that arise.
In doing so, we ensure that every child at Wilbury Junior School is provided with the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to thrive, achieve and confidently contribute to their school, community and the wider world.
