Year 4

Welcome back Year 4. We are looking forward to a great Summer Term.

Throughout our curriculum, we will be continuing our development of a Growth Mindset, where we ask that you have a positive attitude towards everything that you do and that you try your best. This will enable you to approach all aspects of life with resilience, respect and tolerance.

Our Creative Curriculum topic this term is all about ‘The Mighty Mayans’. In History, we will be learning about the Mayan civilisation including investigating their religious beliefs and Gods. We will research and find out about daily life as a Mayan including food, jobs and farming.  In Geography, we will be locating countries using maps, atlases and globes with a focus on South America.

In English, we will initially be looking at the story of, ‘The Iron Man’ by Ted Hughes. Where had he come from? Nobody knows. How was he made? Nobody knows. We will then go on to look a range of genres including persuasive writing, recounts, narrative and non-chronological reports. In Reading, we will be looking at the story of The Great Chocoplot by Chris Callaghan. What will happen when the end of chocolate is announced?

Times Tables will be a key focus in Year 4 with the Multiplication Times Table Check in June. Please practise your times tables as much as possible at home and in school. You are expected to know all your tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4. Maths lessons will be taught from our Power Maths scheme. Over the term, we will cover lots of new Maths topics as well as add to the skills we already have and develop them even further! To start our new unit, we will be looking at decimals. We shall explore tenths and hundredths as well as dividing whole numbers by 10 and 100.

The homework expectations remain the same. You will have weekly spellings, which will be tested on a Friday. In your spelling practice book, you will need to practise your spellings three times a week. You will need to read at home at least three times a week and your planner will need to be signed by an adult. You should be using Times Tables Rockstars regularly in order to have at least 1000 points by the end of each week as well as to help prepare for the Multiplication Tables Check.

Please come to school in your PE kit on your PE days (red school jumper, white polo shirt and plain black shorts or jogging bottoms). Stud earrings need to be taped or removed.

Year 4 PE days will be Monday and Tuesday for all classes.
