Year 4

Welcome to Year 4

Welcome back, new classrooms, some new teachers for a new term.

Our first term in year four is going to be a busy one. We have an exciting trip booked to West Stow Anglo-Saxon Village on Friday 27th September as part of our main history-based Creative Curriculum topic on Anglo-Saxons and Vikings. We will also be designing, making and evaluating our own Viking shields in Design Technology and, in art, we will be making Anglo-Saxon brooches and Viking longships.

We start the term in English, looking at and writing our own Roman myths. In Guided Reading we will be sharing 'Arthur and the Golden Rope' by Joe Todd Stanton, then moving on to 'Toto the Ninja Cat' by Dermot O'Leary. After half-term, we will be reading 'The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe' by C. S. Lewis.

The whole school is starting an exciting new maths scheme this term called Power Maths. We will be building on the learning the children developed in year three and will begin by focusing on Place Value. We will also particularly be concentrating on developing the children's knowledge and recall of their times tables, as they will be required to undertake the new statutory Times Tables test in the summer term. Please ensure your child is accessing Times Table Rock Stars as often as possible (daily would be fantastic).

This half term, our science topic is about Scientists and Inventors, then after half-term we will be learning about Electricity.

The homework expectations remain the same as last year: the children will have weekly spellings, which will be tested on a Friday. the children have a new spelling practice book, which will need to be used at least three times a week; the children should be reading their reading books at least three times a week, please make sure their planners are signed by an adult because if they are not reading for these three sessions, they will be required to spending Friday lunchtime with Mrs Banks; children should also be using Times Tables Rock Stars.

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Fridays. The children be doing football with a Rising Stars professional on a Tuesday afternoon and then basketball with their class teacher on a Friday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has suitable outdoor PE kit (including trainers), which is clearly named.

We are looking forward to an busy and exciting term.
