Year 4

Welcome,

Our new topic this term is Ancient Civilisations, your child will learn about three of the earliest civilisations in the world; ancient Sumer, ancient Egypt and the Indus Valley civilisation. They will study the ancient Sumerian and ancient Egyptian civilisation in detail, to discover how crucial factors like water sources and farming helped them to develop and thrive. They will find out about important inventions and the growth of cities. They will also study the lives of different people in society, including the roles of kings and pharaohs. The children will reflect on their learning by identifying the similarities and differences between the two civilisations, before studying the Indus Valley civilisation independently. They will explore sources of evidence about the location of the Indus Valley, cities and trade, and note the reasons why historians know less about the Indus Valley than other ancient civilisations. The children will then compare all three civilisations, before learning about the causes and consequences of each civilisation’s decline. They will also consider whether or not these civilisations left a lasting legacy.

In English, we will initially be looking at a text called 'The Iron Man' by Ted Hughes. The children will have the opportunity to explore the text, describe the characters as well as re-write their own version of the story. Throughout the rest of the summer term, we will continue to look a wide range of texts from different genres with a focus on using paragraphs, inverted commas and apostrophes correctly.

In Guided Reading, we will be looking at 'Secrets of a Sun King' by Emma Carroll, which ties in with our history topic. This is a story of secrets and wrongs that must be put right in order to break the deadly curse. So Lil and her friends, Tulip and Oz embark on an incredible journey – to return the package to its proper resting place, to protect those they love, and to break the deadly pharaoh's curse.

Maths lessons will be taught from our Power Maths scheme. Over the term, we will cover lots of new Maths topics, add to skills we already have and develop them even further! To start off the term we will be looking at decimals, money and time. We will be concentrating on developing knowledge and recollection of times tables, as children will be required to undertake the statutory Times Tables test that is fast approaching. Children should be able to recall all their times tables up to 12 x 12.

PE days for Aqua and Azure are Monday and Friday. In PE, we will be learning about net and wall games, orienteering, swimming and athletics. Please ensure you have a named PE kit, including trainers, for outdoor PE.
