Year 4

Welcome,

We are eager to welcome you into your new classrooms and start a great new term. Our Creative Curriculum topic this term is all about Vikings! We have lots of exciting lessons planned. We will be becoming historians and we will be thinking about archaeology and how we know so much about this period of history. We will explore and discover the interesting and sometimes gory lives of the Vikings. We will use our geographical skills to discover where the Vikings came from and where they travelled to. Using our Design and Technology skills, we will create shields and Viking long ships.

In English, we will initially be looking at a text about a Viking adventure and writing a diary about a very special day, of a small boy, who must complete a task for a Norse God. We will then go on to look at Norse Mythology and have a go at writing our very own Viking Myths. After half term, we will continue to write in a range of genres including persuasive writing, non-chronological reports and poetry.

In Guided Reading, we will be looking at the journey of Hiccup as he endeavours to prove himself as a true Viking in ‘How to Train your Dragon’ by Cressida Cowell. We shall also look at the text of the ‘Ice Palace’ by Robert Swindells. If you have your own copy of either of these texts, you are welcome to bring them into school and read along.

Maths lessons will be taught from our Power Maths scheme. Over the term, we will cover lots of new maths topics, add to skills we already have and develop them even further! To start off the term we will be looking at place value and then addition and subtraction. We will be concentrating on developing knowledge and recollection of times tables, as you will be required to undertake the statutory Times Tables test in the summer term.

In Science this term, within the topic ‘Animals, including Humans,’ we will be investigating ‘Teeth and the Human Digestive System.’ We shall also be looking at food chains where we will identify producers, predators and prey.

The homework expectations remain the same as last year. You will have weekly spellings, which will be tested on a Friday. In your spelling practise book, you will need to practise your spellings at least three times a week. You will need to read at home at least three times a week and your planner will need to be signed by an adult. You should be using Times Tables Rock Stars regularly. The expectation is that all children should know all 12 times tables by the end of Year 4.

In PE, we will be practising our Hockey, Rugby and Netball skills as well as swimming lessons every afternoon for one week. Please ensure you have a named PE kit, including trainers, for outdoor PE.

Your PE days are: 4Azure (Mr Miller) - Monday and Wednesday

4Aqua (Mrs Thomas/Miss Bottazzi) – Tuesday and Friday

4Turquiose (Mr Chemelal) - Monday and Friday

Mr Miller, Mrs Thomas, Miss Bottazzi and Mr Chemelal.
