Welcome back, we hope you all had a lovely Christmas and New Year.
Spring term in Year Four is going to be a short but busy one.
We start the term in English, looking at persuasive texts and playscripts. In Guided Reading, we will be reading ‘The Secret of Platform 13’ by Eva Ibbotson. In the second half of the term, we will be reading ‘Butterfly Lion’ by Michael Morpurgo.
We will be continuing using Power Maths. Our first unit is on multiplication and division, followed by area. We will still be concentrating on developing the children's knowledge and recall of their times tables, as they will be required to undertake the new statutory Times Tables test in the summer term. Please ensure your child is accessing Times Table Rock Stars as often as possible (daily would be fantastic). We will be testing children on their times tables weekly.
This half term, our science topic is about States of Matter, then after half-term we will be learning about Sounds.
Our creative curriculum topic is on Water for the whole term. We have lots of exciting lessons planned including painting using water colours and making a model of the water cycle. We will also be linking this to our music lessons. Our first lesson in the 1st week back, will consist of engaging activities linked to this topic. On Friday 20th March, we have a trained professional from Affinity Water coming in to teach us about this topic. This will be linked to a STEM investigation.
The homework expectations remain the same as last year: the children will have weekly spellings, which will be tested on a Friday. The children have a new spelling practise book, which will need to be used at least three times a week; the children should be reading their reading books at least three times a week, please make sure their planners are signed by an adult; children should also be using Times Tables Rock Stars. It is essential that the children are learning their times tables. Our expectation is that the children should know all 12 times tables by the end of Year 4.
Our PE days are as follows: 4G Tuesday and Wednesday, 4OC and 4K on Mondays and Tuesdays. The children will be doing tag rugby with a Rising Stars professional on a Tuesday afternoon and dance with their class teacher. This will link to our creative curriculum topic on water. Please ensure that your child has suitable outdoor PE kit (including trainers), which is clearly named.
We are looking forward to a busy and exciting term.
