Year 4

Welcome Back Year 4,

We hope you have had a wonderful Easter holiday. We are so excited to welcome you back and get started on our new learning. We have lots of exciting and wonderful things in store this term.

Our Creative Curriculum topic is all about The Mighty Maya! We will be researching the geography of South America and the history of this ancient civilisation. We will be looking at maps, investigating the culture and delving into the origins of chocolate. We may even have a very special visitor!

In English, initially we will be looking at a variety of texts, such as Cracking Contraptions, Until I Met Dudley and Charlie Small: Gorilla City. We will use these to create explanation texts based on a variety of real and imaginary machines.  After half term, we will continue to write in a range of genres including persuasive writing, non-chronological reports and poetry.

In Guided Reading, we will be reading ‘The Great Chocoplot’ by Chris Callaghan. This is the tale of mysteriously disappearing chocolate and the potential of a ‘chocopocalypse!’ If you have your own copy of this text, you are welcome to bring it into school to read along.

Maths lessons will be taught from our Power Maths scheme. Over the term, we will cover lots of new maths topics and continue to develop skills we already have. To start off the term we will be looking at Decimals and then moving on to Geometry and Time. We will continue to concentrate on developing our knowledge and recollection of times tables, in preparation for the statutory Times Tables test.

In Science this term, we will be studying ‘Habitats’ and the categorisation of minibeasts. This will include going on a Bug Hunt and raising and releasing our own butterflies. After half term we will be looking at ‘Electricity,’ and investigating how to create circuits using wires, buzzers and switches.

The homework expectations remain the same as the Autumn and Spring Term. You will have weekly spellings, which will be tested on a Friday. In your spelling practise book, you will need to practise your spellings at least three times a week. You will need to read at home at least three times a week and your planner will need to be signed by an adult. You should be using Times Tables Rock Stars regularly. The expectation is that all children should know all 12 times tables by the end of Year 4.

In PE, we will be playing rounders and developing our athletic skills. Please ensure you have a named PE kit, including trainers, for outdoor PE.

Your PE days are:
